"Preparing" a splash weapon?

Post by Essence »

WTF is this? There's a chart in the SRD that lists what kind of action a variety of different actions are, and on it there's a line that calls "Preparing to throw a splash weapon" a full-round action.

What the fuck is up with that? Since when can you not just quick-draw and throw a pouch of Alchemist's Whatever?

PHB equipment[/quote wrote:Oil: A pint of oil burns for 6 hours in a lantern. You can use a flask of oil as a splash weapon. Use the rules for alchemist's fire, except that it takes a full round to prepare a flask with a fuse.

That's not "a splash weapon" meaning "all splash weapons", just those specific splash weapons that require a full round action to prepare.

Am I wrong in thinking that alchemists fire just got cheaper?

Wow, talk about a blast from the past. The last time I used that rule (i.e. the last time I threw a flask of oil) was literally one month after I started playing D&D.

Back in OD&D, flasks of oil were pretty badass.
In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.

They did the same amount of damage that they do now, only monsters didn't have Con Bonuses and reflex saves weren't codified. A Troll had, on average, 30 Hit Points. And it was going to have to sacrifice an entire round to make a no-modifiers roll to put out the fire.

That meant that a Troll couldn't afford to not put the fire out, and that putting the fire out was going to give the party at least an entire round to beat the living hell out of it.
